Whether you prefer modern or contemporary art, the mixture of permanent and temporary exhibitions mean there is something for everyone from art to long woodland walks. Located just outside Wakefield this museum is a must-visit to learn more about the mining industry in the local area and beyond. There are a wide range of exhibitions for visitors of all ages as well as regular underground tours of the mine led by former miners themselves. Free entry.

3. Nostell Priory

If you are interested in local history, Nostell Priory should be on your to do list. Dating from the 18th century, the building and its 300 acre gardens and parkland provide a superb day out for all the family. Free for National Trust members, admission charge for non-members.

This park is just 3.5 miles outside the city and offers trails for walkers, cyclists, runners and horse riders as well as an orienteering course and geocaching.
